Red Hawks Lose First Game of Trinity Holiday Tournament

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Ripon's men's basketball team fell to Schreiner University Saturday afternoon, 77-64, in their first game of the Trinity (Texas) Holiday Tournament. The Red Hawks suffered the loss despite shooting 42 percent (10-24) from 3-point range, including 55 percent (6-11) from downtown in the second half, while also holding a lead for 30 of the game's 40 minutes.

Ripon (5-3) came firing out of the gates, as Ty Sabin and Jordan Stiede connected on back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Red Hawks an early 6-3 lead. Ripon then used a 13-2 run to take a 12-point advantage mid-way through the opening half. That was followed by a 20-7 run by Schreiner (4-5) to end the half, giving Schreiner a 31-30 halftime lead.

The Red Hawks began the second half the same way they began the first - with a Sabin 3-pointer, which gave Ripon the lead. After another 3-pointer by Sabin and two more by Justin Leistikow and Nathan Larson, Ripon took an 11-point lead with 15 minutes remaining. With the Red Hawks still leading by 10 and just over 10 minutes left in the game, Schreiner made one final run, going on a 27-6 run to take an 11-point lead with two and a half minutes left to secure the come-back victory.

Sabin led the Red Hawks with 21 points on 4-of-8 shooting from 3-point range, moving him into ninth in school history for career points and into fourth in school history for career 3-pointers. Stiede added eight points and three rebounds, while Larson and Brendan McCoy each scored six points.

Schreiner was led by Wes Miller's 17 points, while Jared Thompson scored 15 off the bench and Blake Kelley contributed 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting. Schreiner finished the game shooting 50 percent (27-54) from the field, including 58 percent (15-26) in the second half.

The Red Hawks will try to rebound in their second game of the Holiday Tournament on Sunday when they'll face the host team, Trinity (Texas) University. That game will begin at 5 p.m. and can be seen live at https://new.trinity.edu/live.
