SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Playing their second and final team of the Trinity Holiday Tournament, the Ripon men's basketball team lost to the host team, Trinity (Texas), by a score of 77-71. The Red Hawks shot just 25 percent (6-24) in the first half, and watched Trinity sink 61 percent (20-33) of their second half shots.
The game was tightly contested throughout the first half, with Trinity (3-6) never trailing until
Elliot Hoerdemann hit a pair of free throws with just under two minutes left before halftime to give Ripon a 23-21 lead. Trinity tied the game with two free throws of their own and would take a two-point halftime lead on a Matt Jones jumper just before halftime.
Ripon (5-4) took the lead again in the second half on back-to-back 3-pointers by
Nathan Larson and after Trinity grabbed the lead back,
Ty Sabin connected on a 3-pointer to give Ripon the lead with just under 11 minutes to play. That lead would be short-lived however, as Trinity went on a 14-5 run to take a six-point advantage with five and a half minutes remaining. Ripon answered with a 6-0 run of their own, capped by a three-point play by
Ty Ketz to tie the game at 61, but that's as close as the Red Hawks would get, as Trinity was able to hold them at arm's length the rest of the day.
Sabin led Ripon with 18 points and five rebounds, while
Brendan McCoy added nine points.
Cal Schultz added eight points, while Hoerdemann, Ketz,
Justin Leistikow and
Koy Brecklin each scored seven.
Trinity was led by Ben Beatie's double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Matthew Colliflower scored a team-high 14 points off the bench, while Nik Oakes added 13 points and A.J. Pulliam added 12.
The Red Hawks will now return home where they'll play Marian University on December 30. That game will begin at 7 p.m. at Ripon's Storzer Center.
