WHITTIER, Calif. - The Ripon women's basketball team won for the fourth time in five games Tuesday afternoon, defeating Concordia-Chicago 59-57 in their second and final game of the Whittier Holiday Tournament. The Red Hawks shot 41 percent (23-56) from the field, including 50 percent (6-12) from 3-point range, while also out-rebounding Concordia 46-30. Fifteen of Ripon's 46 rebounds came on the offensive end of the court, which led to 15 second-chance points by the Red Hawks.
Ripon (7-3) scored the first five points of the game and led for the entire first quarter. Concordia's first lead came on the first basket of the second quarter and it would remain a two possession game until the final minutes of the period, which saw Concordia score the final seven points to take a 32-23 halftime lead.
Concordia (4-4) also scored the first two baskets of the third quarter, taking their largest lead of 13 points just one minute into the period. Ripon then went on a 16-4 run, which featured baskets by six different players, including a pair of 3-pointers from
Emma McDonald. The Red Hawks would tie the game at 43 on a
Jonalee Elliott jumper with 35 seconds left in the quarter, but a Concordia 3-pointer would give the Cougars the lead entering the final period.
Megan Jensen tied the game once more with a 3-pointer in the first minute of the fourth quarter. After Concordia scored the next seven points, Ripon went on a 12-0 run of their own, highlighted by another Jensen 3-pointer to give the Red Hawks the lead with one and a half minutes to play. Concordia cut the lead to one with 14 seconds remaining, and after a
Nicole Herkert free throw, Ripon's defense held up for one final possession to secure the victory.
Elliott led Ripon with 12 points, to go along with three steals, while Herkert added seven points, three assists and a game-high 10 rebounds (seven offensive). Jensen and McDonald each scored nine points, with three 3-pointers apiece, while
Maddie Koster finished with four points, eight rebounds and a game-high five assists.
Concordia was led by Lauren Orr's 12 points, while Morgan Jahnke added 10 points, four rebounds and three assists. The Cougars shot 37 percent (23-62) from the field, including 26 percent (7-27) from 3-point range.
The Red Hawks will now return to the Midwest, where they will travel to Knox College on Saturday. That game will begin at 3 p.m. in Galesburg, Ill. and can be seen live atÂ
