Red Hawks Drop Two Games On Day One of MWC Classic

JANESVILLE, Wis. - On the first day of the three-day Midwest Conference Softball Classic, Ripon lost both of their games. The Red Hawks started the day with a 13-5 loss in six innings to Knox, before ending the day with an 11-4 loss to Cornell.

Against Knox (1-16, 1-4 MWC), the Red Hawks (4-17, 1-5 MWC) struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. They got things started with back-to-back doubles by Ashley Parkkonen and Tene Robinson to lead off the inning. Robinson would later score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Stephanie Cartwright.

Knox would cut that lead in half with a run in the bottom of the second, followed by a four-run third inning to take their first lead of the day. Ripon answered back with three runs in the top of the fourth, keyed by a two-run single by Meg Krautsch to tie the score at five.

In the bottom of the fourth, Knox went back in front, scoring four runs on one swing of the bat, as K. Behrens hit a grand slam. The Prairie Fire added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the game.

Krautsch led the Red Hawks with three of Ripon's six hits, as Knox failed to get her out each time she stepped to the plate. Knox's 13 runs came on 12 hits, as they had five players with multi-hit games.

In Ripon's second game, the Red Hawks fell behind early, as Cornell (19-4, 3-1 MWC) scored on an RBI single in the top of the first. The Rams added two more runs in the top of the third, before Ripon got on the board on an RBI single by Parkkonen in the bottom of the third.

The Red Hawks pulled within one run in the fourth when Krautsch scored on a groundout after drawing a walk to lead off the inning. Cornell then opened up a six-run lead with a five-run fifth, with the big blow coming on a two-run double with two outs in the inning.

Ripon scored two more runs in the fifth, which included an RBI single by Ashley Gnacinski, but that was not enough.

The Red Hawks recorded eight hits in the game, with two apiece coming from Gnacinski and Haylea Hoskins.

The MWC Classic will continue on Saturday when Ripon will play Lake Forest and Grinnell at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively. All games will once again be played at Youth Sports Complex in Janesville, Wis.
