Red Hawks Drop Pair of Games To Lawrence

RIPON, Wis. - The Ripon softball team lost both games of a doubleheader Thursday afternoon, losing to Lawrence University by scores of 10-7 and 8-0.

In the day's first game, the two teams combined for 29 hits. Lawrence (19-9, 7-3 MWC) struck first with five runs in the opening inning, scoring on a bases loaded walk and a pair of two-run singles. The Vikings added two runs in the top of the second on an RBI groundout and a run-scoring single.

Ripon (5-22, 2-10 MWC) then got on the board in the bottom of the second, scoring their first run on a bases loaded throwing error. They scored again on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Desiree Velazquez, before Ashley Gnacinski ripped a bases loaded triple to deep right field, pulling Ripon within two runs.

Lawrence got one run back in the fourth on a solo home run from Kori Looker, who would add an RBI single the following inning. The Vikings tacked on another run in the sixth when Katie Schumacher connected on home run to lead off the inning.,

Trailing by five entering the bottom of the seventh, Ripon had one final rally in them. After Jessica Kobelt drove in a run with a one-out single, the Red Hawks loaded the bases, followed by an RBI by Korrine Peterson on a fielder's choice. Ripon would leave the bases loaded however, as Lawrence got the final batter to pop up, ending the game.

Kobelt led Ripon with a three-hit performance, while Velazquez, Gnacinski, Stephanie Cartwright, and Haylea Hoskins each finished with two hits. Kobelt also scored a team-high two runs. Gnacinski (5-9) struck out four batters in her seven innings of work, but was saddled with the loss.

Lawrence had four players record multiple hits, led by Looker, who was 4-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Kara Vance (9-4) picked up the win, while Liz Barthels recorded her first save of the season.

The day's second game wasn't nearly as close. Lawrence again scored in the top of the first on an RBI double from Amanda Jaskolski. The Vikings scored again in the fourth when Jaskolski crossed the plate on an RBI double by Looker. They doubled their lead an inning later when Jaskolski drove in two more runs with a single to left field.,

That's where the score would remain until the final inning when Jaskolski added two more RBI when she smacked the ball over the left field fence for her ninth home run of the season. Taylor Dodson and Schumacher also drove in one run apiece in the inning.

Ripon finished the game with five hits, with three coming off the bat of Velazquez, and the other two coming from Meg Krautsch and Rebeccah Jones. Celine Diedrick (0-2) suffered the loss, striking out four in her six innings.

Jaskolski led Lawrence by going 3-for-3 with five RBI and two runs scored. Barthels earned the victory by pitching seven innings of shutout ball, while striking out three.

The Red Hawks will be in action again on Saturday when they'll host Beloit College. That doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m. at Tracy Field in Ripon and will serve as Ripon's annual Senior Day celebration, honoring Peterson and Gnacinski.
