RIPON, Wis. - The Red Hawks softball team lost both games of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon to Beloit College, as the Buccaneers never trailed in either game. Ripon dropped the first game 10-3, before losing the second by a score of 7-3.
Game one saw Beloit (14-18, 6-4 MWC) get on the board early, scoring a run in the top of the first on an RBI single through the left side of the infield. The Buccaneers added another run in the second, before adding three more in the fourth.,
Ripon (5-24, 2-12 MWC) got on the board in the fifth when
Andie Winters and
Korrine Peterson both scored on a dropped fly ball in the outfield. That's where the score would remain until Beloit opened the floodgates in the seventh, scoring five runs on five hits and one error.
The Red Hawks never gave up, as Winters scored another run in the bottom of the seventh on a fielder's choice, but that's all the runs they could muster in the final inning.
Ripon recorded six hits in the game, with Peterson and
Desiree Velazquez leading the team with two apiece.
Beloit finished with 14 hits, with three apiece coming from Tala Cornell, Bethany Stavrakas, and Emily Dorjath. Stavrakas and Dorjath also combined to drive in five runs. Jen Zucker (11-6) earned the win, allowing one earned run on six hits and striking out 11 batters in a seven-inning complete game.
The second game of the day saw Beloit get on the board first once again, as they plated two runs in the top of the second on an RBI triple by Cornell and an RBI bunt single by Stavrakas. Ripon got one of those runs back in the bottom of that inning thanks to an RBI single by Velazquez, but the Red Hawks would leave the bases loaded to end the inning.
Beloit added three more runs in the fifth, with two of those coming on a two-out error. Ripon then scored twice more in the bottom of that frame, as
Haylea Hoskins and Peterson each crossed the plate due to a single from Velazquez, but Beloit would put the game on ice with one run in both the sixth and seventh innings.
The Red Hawks finished with five hits in the game, two of which came from Velazquez, who also finished with the team's only two RBI.
Beloit was led by a four-hit performance from Stavrakas, while Cornell and Maddie Terlap each scored twice. Megan Salm (3-9) earned the win for the Buccaneers, while Zucker was credited with her first save of the year.
Ripon will be in action again on Tuesday when they'll host a doubleheader against Carthage College, whom they defeated 5-3 earlier this season. Tuesday's twinbill will begin at 3 p.m. in Ripon.
