BELOIT, Wis. - One day after sweeping a doubleheader from Beloit, the Ripon College baseball team took one of two games against the Buccaneers. The Red Hawks won the first game, 4-1, before losing the final game of the series by a score of 6-4.
Ripon (10-11, 6-2 MWC North) started the scoring in the top of the second when
Nick Schmitt led the inning off with his first home run of the season.
Nick Kita doubled that lead in the third with an RBI single that scored
Nick Uhen from second base. The Red Hawks added their third run of the game in the fourth when
Dakotah Kirchenwitz singled through the left side of the infield, allowing
Jake Reinke to score.
Beloit (15-13, 5-7 MWC North) got on the board in the sixth thanks to a lead off triple and a sacrifice fly, but that would be their only scoring of the game. Ripon added an insurance run in the top of the ninth on an RBI double by
Mitchell Busch.
The Red Hawks finished with 13 hits, with two apiece coming from Kirchenwitz, Kita, Busch, and Uhen.
Matt Hecht (1-4) earned the win, allowing one earned run in six innings, while
Jeff Schuurmans pitched a one-hit ninth inning for his first save of the season.
In the nightcap, Ripon again scored first, plating two runs in the top of the fourth. The first came on an RBI single by
Nate Siudak, while the second came when Siudak scored on a fielder's choice.
Beloit took their first lead of the day in the fifth when they scored three runs on three hits, and two Ripon errors. That lead lasted until the seventh when the Red Hawks scored two runs on a double by
Michael Polcyn. The Buccaneers then scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh, including two on a home run by Austin Martinez, to seize control of the game.
Ripon recorded seven hits in the game, with two of those coming off the bat of Polcyn.,
The Red Hawks will be in action again on Tuesday when they'll battle Wisconsin Lutheran in a single nine-inning affair, beginning at 4 p.m. in Milwaukee.
