RIPON, Wis. -,Ripon's baseball team did not yield a single run in Saturday's doubleheader, defeating Lawrence 1-0 in an 11-inning nail biter, and 12-0 in seven innings during the nightcap. The first game featured 14 hits between the two teams, before the Red Hawks tallied 17 hits by themselves in the day's second game, while
Marshall Zahn tossed a one-hit gem on the mound.
In game one, the two teams combined to leave 16 runners on base, as the fans in the stands were treated to an extra innings pitcher's duel. The only run of the game came in the bottom of the 11th, which was led off by a triple from
Michael Polcyn. He would score one batter later when
Nick Schmitt singled off the left field fence to end the game.
Polcyn and
Robbie Schuettpelz each finished with two hits to lead the Red Hawks (13-12, 8-2 MWC North).
Patrick Van Daalwyk pitched 10.1 innings, allowing seven hits and striking out five.
Michael Anderson (3-0) picked up the win however, as he entered the game with one out in the top of the 11th, inducing a double play from the only batter he faced.
The second game was highlighted by Ripon's offensive outburst and Zahn's pitching performance that saw him retire the first 18 batters he faced, before giving up a walk and a single to the first two batters in the seventh. Zahn (3-2) also finished with eight strikeouts in his seven innings of work.
At the plate, Ripon scored twice in the second, six times in the fourth, once in the fifth, and three more times in the sixth. Ten different Ripon players registered at least one hit, including all nine starters. Polcyn and
Nick Kita led the way with three hits apiece, while Schmitt recorded a game-best three RBI. Kita,
Dakotah Kirchenwitz, and
Nate Siudak each scored two runs.
The Red Hawks will battle Lawrence (10-19, 2-12 MWC) in another doubleheader on Sunday. That twinbill will begin at 1 p.m. in Appleton.
