DE PERE, Wis. - For the second time in a week and a half, the Ripon College volleyball team has defeated St. Norbert College. The Red Hawks' latest victory came Tuesday night in five sets (
25-22, 25-21, 24-26, 21-25, 16-14), helping Ripon remain undefeated in Midwest Conference play and tied for first place in the MWC standings.
After winning the first two sets, Ripon lost the next two and were down by scores of 6-10 and 9-12 in the final set, before winning the deciding set by a score of 16-14.
Emily Gary led the Red Hawks with a match-high 22 kills, which gives her 995 for her career, and puts her just five kills away from becoming the sixth player in school history to reach the 1,000 kills plateau. Gary also finished with a hitting percentage of .606 and four block assists.
Abbi Williamson also came up big with a match-high 52 assists, moving the junior setter into third-place in school history for career assists (2,483).
Both teams recorded double-digit kills in each set. Ripon finished the match with a team hitting percentage of .277, while St. Norbert posted a hitting percentage of .190.
Katie Berrell and
Allison Barnes recorded 17 and 15 kills for the Red Hawks, respectively. Barnes also finished with 15 digs and five block assists, while
Maddie Koster also posted 15 digs, to go along with a team-high two service aces.
Stacie Klika led the Red Hawks in digs, with 19.
"We had a lull in play during the third and fourth sets, but fought our way back to win a hard-fought fifth set," Ripon Head Coach Katie Astrauskas said. "Emily played extremely well, while Maddie was scrappy in the back row and set the standard for work on defense, and Allison and Katie held their own on the outside to find a variety of shots throughout the night."St. Norbert was led by Halie Ferry's 21 kills and 12 digs. Hannah Johnshoy and Justice Janke added 15 and 10 kills, respectively. Ripon held the advantage in team blocks, 10-6.
The Red Hawks will try to continue their winning ways this weekend when they'll host Illinois College during Saturday's Homecoming match, which will begin at 1:00 p.m. at Storzer Center.
