RIPON, Wis. - Ripon's women's basketball team forced 20 turnovers Saturday night, but couldn't overcome Monmouth's 46 percent (10-22) shooting from 3-point range, as the Fighting Scots defeated the Red Hawks 72-68. Ripon dominated the paint, outscoring Monmouth down low 40-22 in a game that featured seven ties and 16 lead changes.
Neither team led by more than four during the first seven minutes, but a 3-pointer by Katie Houston gave Monmouth (3-12, 2-8 MWC) a seven point advantage with just seconds remaining in the first quarter. The Fighting Scots led by nine early in the second quarter before Ripon (9-6, 5-5 MWC) scored eight consecutive points to cut it to one. Monmouth then ended the half on an 11-4 run to take an eight-point lead into halftime.
That lead quickly vanished in the third quarter, as Ripon scored the first 12 points of the second half. The Red Hawks never trailed the rest of the quarter, taking a two-point lead into the fourth and final quarter. A
Megan Jensen free throw gave Ripon a five-point lead with eight and a half minutes remaining, but back-to-back 3-pointers by Keri Dodson gave Monnmouth the lead less than one minute later. The lead changed hands nine times in the fourth quarter alone with the final time coming with 54 seconds to play on a layup by Monmouth's Kelsey Walsberg.
Emma McDonald led Ripon with 17 points and seven rebounds (five offensive). Jensen added 14 points, as she and McDonald each made two 3-pointers.
Maggie Oimoen finished with 13 points and eight rebounds off the bench.
Monmouth was led by Houston's 29 points and nine rebounds, while also making 5-of-6 from 3-point range. Dodson added 14 points, while Walsberg finished with 13 points off the bench. Emily Watkins also chipped in with 10 points and eight rebounds.
