GRINNELL, Iowa - The Ripon men's basketball team defeated Grinnell College 121-91 Saturday afternoon thanks to the Red Hawks hot shooting that saw them make 63 percent (42-67) of their shots, including 46 percent (5-11) of their 3-pointers. The game wasn't in doubt for most of the day with Ripon leading for the final 37 minutes.
Grinnell (8-10, 5-8 MWC) scored the game's first four points for their largest and only lead of the day. The Red Hawks (11-7, 9-4 MWC) answered with 12 consecutive points and wouldn't lead by less than four the rest of the afternoon.
Ty Sabin scored nine points in less than two minutes mid-way through the first half to give Ripon a double-digit lead. They would take their largest lead of the half on a layup by
Cal Schultz, which put them up by 21 before taking a 16-point advantage into halftime.
Ripon led by double digits for the entire second half, using a 28-15 run in the first eight minutes of the second half to take a 29-point lead.
Nathan Larson gave Ripon their largest lead of 36 on a layup with two minutes remaining. The Red Hawks held Grinnell to 38 percent (32-84) shooting in the game, including 34 percent (15-44) from 3-point range. Ripon was able to sustain their lead throughout the day thanks to shooting 87 percent (32-37) from the free throw line.
Sabin led Ripon's offensive attack with 31 points on 11-of-18 shooting, which included three 3-pointers, while also becoming just the fourth player in program history to score more than 400 points in three different seasons. Larson added career-highs of 20 points and five rebounds, while Schultz also notched a career-high 20 points, as both players made 7-of-8 shots from the field.
Ty Ketz also chipped in with 12 points and five assists, while
Liam Lesniak recorded career-highs of 10 points and four assists, to go along with six rebounds. The Red Hawks won out-rebounded the Pioneers 53-31, while also outscoring them in the paint, 62-30.
Grinnell was led by Julian Marx's 24 points, while Ky-Sean Johnson added 21. Kyle Parker and Vinny Curta recorded 14 and 10 points, respectively, with Curta also posting eight rebounds and four assists.
With the win, Ripon remains in third place in the MWC standings. Next up on the schedule is a date with second-place Carroll University (14-3, 10-2) on Wednesday. That game will begin at 5 p.m. in Ripon, Wis. and will also serve as Ripon's annual 'Play For The Cure' game.
