RIPON, Wis. - The Ripon women's basketball team saw their four-game winning streak come to an end Saturday afternoon with a 59-53 home loss to Grinnell College. The Pioneers led from start to finish, leading by as many as 10 points in the contest, with both teams shooting 38 percent from the floor.
Grinnell scored the game's first four points before Ripon got on the board with a
Megan Jensen 3-pointer. The Pioneers led by as many as nine in the opening quarter and 10 in the early minutes of the second period, but the Red Hawks closed the gap to four points in the final seconds of the first half, but a Grinnell basket at the buzzer gave them a six-point advantage at the break.
The Pioneers scored the first four points of the second half to extend their lead back to 10, but Ripon battled back once more, cutting that lead to a single point on a
McKenzie Banasik layup in the final minute of the third quarter. Grinnell went back up by seven with six minutes remaining before Ripon made three consecutive baskets to cut the lead to one again with just over four minutes to play, but that's as close as they would get the rest of the day. Grinnell sank all three of their free throws in the final minute to seal the victory.
Maggie Oimoen led Ripon with 13 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots, while
Nicole Herkert posted six points and nine boards. Jensen finished with eight points and a game-high four assists.
Grinnell was led by Alissa Hirsch's 20 points. Kayla Morrissey added 15 points, six rebounds and three steals.
The Red Hawks currently sit in a tie for fourth place in the Midwest Conference and will try to gain some ground on Tuesday when they'll travel to Lake Forest College, which is one-half game in front of the Red Hawks in the standings. That game will begin at 7:30 p.m. and can be seen live at
