WHITEWATER, Wis. - In a battle of unbeatens which saw the teams enter Wednesday's game with a combined 14-0 record, #16 UW-Whitewater defeated Ripon College by a score of 109-96. Ripon shot 75 percent (21-28) in the first half, en route to a 55-47 halftime lead, but couldn't sustain that pace, shooting just 40 percent (15-38) in the second half, including 20 percent (3-15) from 3-point range.
The Red Hawks (6-1) trailed for just 17 seconds during the first half, leading by as many as eight points. Ripon took an early six-point lead on a 3-pointer by
Cal Schultz, but UW-Whitewater (9-0) would battle back to tie the score on four different occasions before taking their first lead of the contest with under three minutes to play in the period. Ripon answered with a
Liam Lesniak jumper on the ensuing possession to take control of the lead once more.
Ripon took their largest lead of the game with 13 and a half minutes left in the second half when they took a 10-point advantage on a
Ty Sabin jumper. UW-W then went on an 11-2 run during the next three minutes to cut Ripon's lead to one. The Red Hawks would hold the Warhawks at bay for the next few minutes until Drew Bryson gave UW-W the lead with just over seven minutes to play. The Warhawks led by five with just under four minutes left, but they would finish the game on a 16-8 run to secure the victory.
Sabin led the Red Hawks with 40 points on 14-of-22 shooting, to go along with four rebounds, five assists and six steals.
Brendan McCoy added 16 points and five rebounds, while Schultz scored 14 points off the bench.
UW-Whitewater shot 57 percent (16-28) in the second half, including 70 percent (7-10) from 3-point range after halftime. They also converted 88 percent (31-35) of their free throws, including 92 percent (23-25) in the second half. Scotty Tyler led the Warhawks with a single game school record of 45 points, including eight 3-pointers, while also recording 11 rebounds and five assists. Chris Jones added 27 points and five assists, while Andre Brown made all five of his 3-pointers, en route to 23 points off the bench.
Ripon will now head west, as their next game is scheduled for December 20 at 9 p.m. CT at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon.
