AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Ripon suffered its first two losses of the season Sunday, losing both games of a doubleheader against Wheaton (Mass.). The Red Hawks never led during the day, losing the first game 3-2, before dropping the second 7-0.
Wheaton (3-1) got things started early in game one, scoring twice in the top of the first via an RBI groundout and a run-scoring single. The Lyons added another run in the top of the sixth when Matt Lavanchy scored on a wild pitch. Ripon (1-2) would cut the lead to one in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by
Jake Reinke and an RBI groundout off the bat of
Nick Kita. Ripon would only manage one more hit the rest of the game, as they were handed their first loss of the year.
Ripon's only two hits came from Reinke and
Randy Finger.
Drew Slade (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing two earned runs in six innings, while striking out six batters.
Wheaton was led by two hits apiece from Lavanchy and Justin Silvestro. Dan Southerland (1-0) picked up the win, allowing two earned runs in 6.1 innings, while striking out seven. Eric Dumas earned his first save of the season, pitching a perfect ninth inning.
In the day's second game, Wheaton did all the scoring, beginning with a sac fly in the bottom of the third inning. The Lyons added two more in the fourth and three more in the sixth, before capping the scoring with an RBI single by Lavanchy in the seventh. Just two of those seven runs were earned due to five Red Hawks errors.
Ripon again finished with two hits in the nightcap, coming from Reinke and Kita.
David Knapp (0-1) allowed six runs, but just one of those were earned, on five hits in 5.2 innings of work.
Wheaton finished the second game with nine hits, three of which came from Zachar Goodwin-Boyd. Jack Fant (1-0) earned the win, pitching seven scoreless innings, while scattering two hits.
The Red Hawks will be in action again on Monday when they'll face Anderson University. That game will begin at 9 a.m. ET at Lake Myrtle Park Field in Winter Haven, Fla.
