CLERMONT, Fla. - The Ripon softball team opened their 2016 season Sunday with losses to both UMass-Boston and Trinity (Conn.), losing 5-1 and 10-1, respectively.
In the first game of the day, UMass-Boston struck first with a sac fly in the top of the second. The Beacons then added four more runs the following inning on five hits in the frame.
Ripon's only run of the game came in the bottom of the third when
Kaylee Arendt tripled to center, scoring
Tene Robinson from first base.
The Red Hawks finished with eight hits, with Arendt and
Ashley Parkkonen each collecting two.
Lexi Reetz (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing five runs in six innings, while striking out four.
UMass-Boston's Annie Thomas (2-0) tossed a gem, allowing one run and striking out eight, while pitching all seven innings. At the plate, the Beacons were led by Lauren Mitsiaris and Morgan Bishop, who posted two hits and two RBI apiece.
In Ripon's second game of the day, they again fell behind early, as Trinity's Emily McQuaid led off the bottom of the first with a triple and would score on a ground-out one batter later. Trinity added four runs on four hits in the second inning, highlighted by a bases loaded triple by McQuaid. Trinity scored once more in the third, before adding four runs on five hits in the fourth.
The Red Hawks recorded three hits in the game coming from Parkkonen,
Renee Packer and
Melanie Kobelt. Parkkonen (0-1) suffered the loss, despite striking out five batters in 3.1 innings.
McQuaid finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate for Trinity with four RBI and two runs scored. Courtney Erickson (1-0) picked up the win, allowing one run on three hits in a five-inning complete game.
