AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Fifth-ranked UW-LaCrosse showed why they were last year's NCAA Division-III College World Series runner-up Tuesday afternoon, defeating Ripon 18-0 and 15-5 in a pair of games that Ripon never led.
UW-LaCrosse (4-2) didn't waste any time, scoring 12 runs in the first inning of the first game, the last 11 of which were unearned. The Eagles added two more runs in the following inning, while scoring once in the fifth and three more times in the sixth.
Ripon (1-5) finished the game with two hits, a single from
Isiah Ramos and a double by
Nick Schmitt.
Brice Swick (0-1) suffered the loss in his first career start for the Red Hawks, allowing one earned run and striking out one in a third of an inning.
In the day's second game, UW-LaCrosse again scored in the first inning, plating runs on an RBI double and a run-scoring single. The Eagles scored another run on a wild pitch in the second, before Ripon got on the board in the bottom of that inning thanks to an RBI single by Swick.
UW-LaCrosse continued to light up the scoreboard in the fourth with four more runs on five hits. Ripon scored again in the fourth on an RBI double by
Josh Oswald, but UW-LaCrosse added two more in the fifth. Ripon then cut the lead to 9-5 in the bottom of the fifth, scoring on a sac fly by Ramos and RBI singles from Schmitt and Oswald. UW-LaCrosse would put the game away with a combined six runs in the final two innings.
Ripon recorded 11 hits in the game, led by Oswald,
Randy Finger and
Michael Barnes, who each had two base knocks.
Aaron Langdon (1-1) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing eight earned runs on 12 hits and striking out four in five innings of work.
UW-LaCrosse registered 20 hits, led by a 4-for-4 effort from Justin Anderson. Four other players posted three hits, while Carter Hoffman led all players with three RBI. Logan Mallek (1-0) earned the victory, pitching 1.2 scoreless innings, while allowing three hits and striking out three.
The Red Hawks will be in action again Wednesday against Suffolk University. That game will begin Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. ET at Lake Myrtle Park Field 2 in Auburndale, Fla.
