Ripon Drops Both Games Tuesday

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Ripon softball team lost both of their games Tuesday afternoon, falling to Calvin College 10-2 in five innings, while also losing to Concordia (Wis.) by a score of 13-7.

In the day's first game, Ripon (0-6) fell behind early when Calvin (3-2) scored three runs in the first inning, with two coming on a triple down the right field line. The Knights added another run in the second on a sacrifice, while plating four more on four hits in the third.

Ripon finally got on the board in the top of the fourth, with both runs coming on a single up the middle by Elizabeth Floodstrand. Calvin would get those two runs back in the bottom of that inning however, which helped them coast to victory.

In addition to Floodstrand, Tene Robinson, Kaylee Arendt and Emily Kollmann also recorded base hits. Ashley Parkkonen (0-3) suffered the loss, striking out three batters in three innings.

Calvin was led by Anna Gernant, who went 3-for-3 at the plate with one run scored. Gernant (2-0) also pitched a complete game, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out eight.

Ripon had a little more success in their second game of the day, which saw them jump on Concordia (Wis.) early. After Concordia (6-6) scored one run in the top of the first, Ripon answered with four in the bottom of that inning. The first three Ripon batters reached base in the frame, which was later followed by a two-run single off the bat of Stephanie Cartwright, giving the Red Hawks their first lead of the season. Lexi Reetz added two RBI of her own later in the inning on a double to center field.

The Red Hawks added two more runs in the second on an RBI triple by Robinson and a run-scoring groundout. Concordia would mount a comeback however, scoring once in the third and four more times on five hits in the fourth to tie the score at six. Ripon grabbed the lead back in the fourth on an RBI single by Robinson, but Concordia wouldn't let off the gas, scoring four times in the fifth to take the lead for good, and adding three more runs in the seventh and final inning.

Robinson led the Red Hawks with a 2-for-4 performance, while scoring two runs and driving in two more. Andie Winters also scored two Ripon runs. Jessica Kobelt suffered the loss, allowing six runs, but just one earned in three innings of relief.

Concordia finished with 15 hits, with three apiece coming from Maddie Zazas and Christine Sharon. That duo also drove in two runs apiece, as did Carly Sobrilsky and Alexis Holsten. Melissa Perkins earned the win, allowing one run on four hits in 5.2 innings of relief.

Ripon will have the day off on Wednesday, before getting back on the field Thursday against McDaniel College and William Paterson at 3 and 5 p.m. ET, respectively. Both games will be played at Legends Way Field Three in Clermont, Fla.
