CLERMONT, Fla. - Ripon's softball team ended their Spring Trip with two losses Friday afternoon, falling to Fredonia and Plattsburgh State by scores of 9-6 and 9-1, respectively.
In their first game of the day, both teams scored two runs in the first inning, with the Red Hawks scoring twice on a single to right field by
Stephanie Cartwright. Fredonia (1-3) then took the lead with two more runs in the top of the second, before Ripon added a run in the bottom of that inning on a sac fly by
Renee Packer.
Fredonia scored two runs for the third consecutive inning in the third and added one more in the fourth. They would take a 9-3 lead with two more runs in the fifth. Ripon battled back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, but it was not enough.
Ripon finished with six hits, with three of those coming off the bat of
Andie Winters. Cartwright added two hits at the plate.
Rebeccah Jones (0-2) suffered the loss, striking out one batter in a seven inning complete game.
In the Red Hawks' second and final game of the day, Plattsburgh State (6-6) jumped out to the first lead of the game with a run in the bottom of the third. Ripon tied things up in the following inning on a lead-off home run to center field by
Kaylee Arendt, but Plattsburgh State took a commanding lead with five runs on five hits and two Ripon errors in the bottom of the fourth. They would end the game with three runs on three hits in the sixth.
Ripon recorded three hits in the contest, with two coming from Arendt and the other off the bat of
Melanie Kobelt.
Jessica Kobelt (0-3) suffered the loss, allowing six earned runs in 5.2 innings, while striking out one without issuing a walk.
Plattsburgh State was led by a 3-for-4 performance and a game-high three RBI. Kaitlyn Preiss added two hits and two RBI, while Amy Glashoff chipped in with two hits and two runs scored. Katie Pitkin (2-3) picked up the victory, allowing one run on two hits and striking out three.
Ripon will now return to Wisconsin where they will next be in action on March 29 at Marian University. That doubleheader will begin at 5 p.m. in Fond du Lac.
