DE PERE, Wis. - Two days after losing a pair of games to St. Norbert, Ripon was able to fare a little better, as the Red Hawks split a doubleheader with the Green Knights on Tuesday. Ripon never trailed in the first game, winning 6-4, but dropped the second game 10-4.
Ripon scored the first run of game one on a sac fly from
Hector Aguinaga in the second inning. They added another in the fourth on an RBI single by
Isiah Ramos and scored two more in the sixth on back-to-back home runs off the bat of
Nick Schmitt and
Josh Oswald. Ripon took a six-run lead in the seventh when two more runs score on an Oswald single.
St. Norbert attempted a late comeback, scoring twice in both the eighth and ninth, but
Andrew Wood came on to shut the door, recording the game's final two outs to record his first save of the season.
David Knapp (1-3) earned the win, allowing two runs on seven hits and striking out three in 7.2 innings of work. The Red Hawks recorded 10 hits in the game, coming from just four players. Schmitt and Oswald led the team with three hits, while Ramos and
Nick Kita each recorded a pair of base knocks.
St. Norbert had three players with multi-hit efforts. Sam Neville (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing four earned runs on seven hits and striking out two in 6.2 innings.
The second game was the complete opposite of the first, with St. Norbert leading from start to finish. The Green Knights got on the board with a run in the first, followed by another in the third, two more in the fourth and another in the fifth to build a 5-0 lead.
Ripon finally got on the board in the sixth when Ramos drove in Schmitt on a fielder's choice. Kita added an RBI single in the seventh and
Robbie Schuettpelz drove in two more with a single in the eighth to cut St. Norbert's lead to one. The Green Knights then got plenty of breathing room in the bottom of that inning, scoring five runs on five hits and two Ripon errors.
The Red Hawks finished with 11 hits, with three coming off the bat of
Michael Barnes and two apiece coming from Schmitt, Schuettpelz and
Randy Finger.
Brice Swick (0-4) suffered the loss, allowing five runs on nine hits and striking out two in five innings of work.
St. Norbert had 14 hits in the game, with three coming from Adam Enwiya. Tyler Banovich led all players with four RBI. Blake Rutherford (1-0) allowed two runs on five hits and struck out four in 6.2 innings, while Jake McMahon notched his first save of the year.
Ripon will be in action again on Wednesday when they'll host UW-Oshkosh in a single game. That contest will begin at 4 p.m. at Francis Field in Ripon.
