RIPON, Wis. - Ripon's softball team went toe-to-toe with Illinois College Saturday, earning a split with the Lady Blues in two closely-played entertaining games. The Red Hawks dropped the first game 4-1, before winning the nightcap 2-1 in come-from-behind fashion.
Game one saw both teams score once in the second inning, with Ripon's lone run coming on an RBI double down the left field line off the bat of
Teara Morgenroth.
Illinois College (15-9, 7-5 MWC) then took control of the game with a three-spot in the top of the fifth on a sac fly and a two-run single.
Both teams finished with five hits. Ripon (2-20, 2-8 MWC) was led by Morgenroth's 2-for-3 performance at the plate.
Ashley Parkkonen (1-6) suffered the loss, allowing four runs and striking out two in five innings.
Illinois College's hits came from five different players. Amanda Price (5-3) picked up the victory, striking out three batters in seven innings.
In the day's second game, neither team scored until the sixth inning, but it wasn't for a lack of trying - Illinois College thought they had scored on a single in the fifth, but an appeal play to third wiped out that run, which would change the landscape of the game.
The Lady Blues did break the scoreless tie in the top of the sixth on an RBI single from Kinzie Verhines. Ripon had an answer for that in the bottom of that inning, tying the game on an RBI double by Parkkonen and taking the lead on a sac fly by
Melanie Kobelt, allowing
Andie Winters to score the go-ahead run from third base.
Ripon's four hits came from four different players (Winters, Parkkonen,
Tene Robinson and
Lexi Reetz). Reetz (1-7) also pitched a gem of a game for her first collegiate victory, allowing zero earned runs on six hits and striking out two, while walking just one in a seven-inning complete game.
Illinois College was led by Shelby Koehler and Verhines, who finished with two hits apiece. Mariah Hedges (5-2) suffered the loss, allowing two runs on four hits in six innings of work.
Ripon will be in action again on Tuesday when they'll host UW-Oshkosh. That doubleheader will begin at 3 p.m. at Tracy Field in Ripon and will have LiveStats available atÂ
