Red Hawks Lose Pair To Monmouth

RIPON, Wis. - The Ripon softball team lost both games of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon, falling to Monmouith College 1-0 and 7-1.

The day's first game featured a pitcher's duel, with the only run of the contest coming in the top of the fourth when Monmouth's Emily Watkins singled in a run.

The two teams combined for 23 strikeouts in the contest. Monmouth's Liz Hippen (12-5) struck out 13 while allowing just three hits in a complete game shutout. Lexi Reetz (1-13) recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts for the Red Hawks, while allowing one run on five hits in her seven innings of work.

Game two saw more scoring in the first inning than the entire first game. Monmouth (25-9, 15-3 MWC) jumped on the Red Hawks (2-31, 2-15 MWC) early, scoring five times in the top of the first. The Fighting Scots scored once more in both the second and sixth inning, before Ripon notched their lone run in the bottom of the seventh when Andie Winters scored on a wild pitch.

Ripon's three hits came from Tene Robinson, Melanie Kobelt and Renee Packer. Ashley Parkkonen (1-9) suffered the loss.

Monmouth recorded 12 hits, led by Watkins and Kaylee Kurtz, who each finished with three. Kurtz (7-3) also drove in three runs and earned the win by allowing one run on three hits and striking out three in seven innings of work.

The Red Hawks will be back in action on Sunday against Knox College. That doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m. at Tracy Field in Ripon.
