Two weeks after ending #10 St. Norbert's Division-III record 72-game conference winning streak, the Ripon College men's basketball team couldn't duplicate that feat, falling to 10th-ranked St. Norbert at the Kress Center in Green Bay by a score of 79-62. The game was won in the second half, which saw St. Norbert shoot 61 percent (17-28) from the field, while Ripon made just 29 percent (8-28) of their shots after halftime.
The first half was tightly contested for the majority of the period. Ripon (14-4, 10-3 MWC) scored the first points of the game on a 3-pointer from
Isaac Masters, which was one of seven 3-pointers by Ripon in the half. The lead then changed hands several times, before St. Norbert (15-3, 12-1 MWC) scored eight consecutive points. After a
Brendan McCoy 3-pointer cut that lead to two, the Green Knights went on a 7-1 run to extend the lead to eight again with two minutes left in the period. Ripon would close the half on an 8-2 run with all eight of their points coming from
Ty Sabin, including a pair of 3-pointers, cutting SNC's lead to two at intermission.
Ripon wasted no time early in the second half, tying the score on the opening possession thanks to a
Koy Brecklin layup. The Red Hawks would take the lead one minute later when Sabin connected on one of his five 3-pointers in the game. Ripon then went on a nearly six-minute scoring drought, allowing St. Norbert to take an 11-point advantage with a 12-0 run. Ripon was able to cut that lead to four on a layup by Sabin with under nine minutes remaining, but that's as close as they'd get the rest of the night. St. Norbert converted nine of their next 12 shots to secure the victory.
Division-III's leading scorer, Sabin finished with 33 points, giving him 2,300 career points, which makes him just the third player in MWC history to reach that milestone. Sabin also recorded team-highs of four assists and two steals. McCoy added 14 points, which included four 3-pointers, while Masters added eight points. Ripon turned the ball over 13 times, while forcing SNC into just five miscues.
St. Norbert had four players score in double figures, led by Tim Marshall's 19 points on 9-of-11 shooting. Ben Bobinski added 18 points and six rebounds, while D.J. DeValk and Mitchell Reinthaler finished with 16 and 12 points, respectively. The Green Knights out-rebounded Ripon 40-28, with 14 of their 40 boards coming on the offensive end.
The Red Hawks will try to rebound on Saturday when they'll host Lake Forest College at Storzer Center in Ripon with the tip-off scheduled for 3 p.m.
