Turnovers Doom Red Hawks In Loss To Webster

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Ripon out-shot Webster Saturday afternoon, while also out-rebounding them by a 42-25 margin, but the Red Hawks couldn't overcome their 31 turnovers, which Webster turned into 29 points en route to a 75-66 win by the Gorlocks.

The game was a see-saw battle early on with four ties and three lead changes in the first quarter. After the two teams entered the second quarter tied at 15, Webster (2-0) scored the final four points of the second quarter to take a 33-29 halftime lead.

Webster also scored the first seven points of the third quarter to take their first double-digit lead of the game. Ripon's Emma McDonald cut the lead back down to single digits on a 3-pointer with seven minutes left in the period, which was the beginning of a 14-5 run to pull within two points. That's as close as the Red Hawks (1-1) would get the rest of the day however, as Webster was able to hold them at arm's length the rest of the way.

For the second straight game, Maggie Oimoen led all scorers with 16 points for the Red Hawks. McDonald added 15 points, nine rebounds, and two steals, while Eleanore Mueller chipped in with 12 points, seven rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Jonalee Elliott also recorded a pair of blocked shots, giving her 91 for her career, which is just two shy of the school record.

Kelsey Miller and Jaysea Morgan each scored 15 points to lead Webster, while Jade Sawyer added 10 points. The Gorlocks recorded 16 steals as a team, led by Taylor Lucas' five steals.

Ripon will try to bounce back on Tuesday when they'll face UW-Stout in their 2017-18 home opener. That game will begin at 7 p.m. at Weiske Gymnasium in Ripon, and can be seen live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/.
