AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Ripon College baseball team ended their 2017 Spring Trip in style Friday afternoon, defeating McDaniel College in convincing fashion by a score of 14-3.
The Red Hawks (1-8) wasted no time getting on the board, as they scored five runs in the top of the first inning.
Randy Finger started the scoring with a two-run single to right, while
Josh Oswald would add a two-run single of his own later in the inning.
Robbie Schuettpelz also drove in a run in that frame with a single of his own, which was one of six Red Hawk hits in the inning.
McDaniel (4-7) scored their first run of the game on a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the second, but Ripon got that run back in the third with a solo homer of their own, as
Randy Finger went yard for the first time this season to lead off the inning.
McDaniel led the bottom of the third off with another solo home run, before adding an RBI single later in the inning to cut Ripon's lead to 6-3. Ripon then extended that lead with an RBI single from Oswald in the fifth, and three more runs in the sixth, coming on a Finger sac fly and a two-run triple by
Nick Taranto.
Ripon's bats continued to stay hot late in the game, as Schuettpelz drove in two more runs in the eighth and
Riley Erickson and Taranto each drove in runs in the ninth.
The Red Hawks finished the game with 17 hits, while the top six batters in the order all scored at least two runs. Finger led Ripon with a 4-for-5 performance at the plate, which included four RBI and three runs scored. Schuettpelz recorded three hits and three RBI, while Taranto, Oswald, Erickson, and
Hector Aguinaga each finished with two hits.
Matt Hecht (1-1) earned the victory, allowing three earned runs on six hits and striking out five in five innings of work.
David Knapp allowed just one hit in four innings of relief.
Ripon will now return back to Wisconsin where they will be in action again on March 29 at UW-Stevens Point. That doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m. in Stevens Point, Wis.
