DE PERE, Wis. - It was a tale of two games Saturday afternoon at St. Norbert College, but each contest resulted in a loss for the Ripon College baseball team. The Red Hawks dropped the first game 11-10 in a wild back-and-forth affair that ended in a walk-off win for the Green Knights, while dropping the second game 11-1 in seven innings, which saw SNC lead from start to finish.
Ripon (4-15, 3-3 MWC) got off to a great start to the day with eight runs on eight hits in the top of the first inning of the first game.
Hector Aguinaga singled in the first run, while
Randy Finger,
David La Tour,
Robbie Schuettpelz, and
Isiah Ramos also recorded an RBI single.
Michael Barnes added two RBI with a single of his own, while
Bennett Groves drew a bases loaded walk for another RBI.
That lead all but vanished one inning later, as St. Norbert (13-5, 5-1 MWC) answered with seven runs on six hits and one Ripon error. That Green Knights rally consisted of three RBI singles, a two-run single, and a two-run double. One inning later, the score was tied at eight as Hunter Larson singled home a run.
Ripon went in front again in the fifth on a triple by La Tour, which scored Groves, but that lead would only last until the bottom of that inning when Jacob Raeder doubled home a pair of runs.
The Red Hawks tied the score in the seventh on a one-out solo homer off the bat of
Nick Taranto. The score would remain tied at 10 until the bottom of the ninth, which saw Tyler Banovich play hero with a two-out RBI single to end the game.
Ripon finished with 14 hits, led by La Tour's 4-for-5 performance at the plate. Aguinaga and Taranto each added two hits. St. Norbert recorded 16 hits in the game.
The day's second game wasn't nearly as close, as St. Norbert scored at least one run in every inning. They scored twice in the first and once each in the second and third. The Green Knights blew the game open with a three-run fourth, followed by one in the fifth and three more in the sixth, before Ripon could get on the board with their lone run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Aguinaga.
Ripon finished the second game with eight hits, led by Aguinaga, who went 4-for-4 at the dish. St. Norbert posted 14 hits in the game, with four players recording multi-hit games.
The Red Hawks will try to rebound on Sunday as they'll play this same St. Norbert team in a doubleheader at Francis Field in Ripon. The first game of that twinbill will begin at Noon, with LiveStats available atÂ
