BELOIT, Wis. - Needing at least a split against Beloit Saturday to remain in contention for an MWC Tournament berth, the Ripon College baseball team lost both contests, dropping the first 7-4 before losing the nightcap 5-4.
The Red Hawks (9-24, 7-8 MWC) took the first lead of the day, scoring two runs on a
Randy Finger double to right field in the top of the fourth. That lead would be short-lived, as Beloit scored four runs in the bottom half of that inning, including three on a bases-clearing triple with two outs.
Beloit (15-17-1, 9-6-1 MWC) added two more runs on a pair of RBI singles in the fifth inning, before plating another run on a single in the sixth. Ripon would score again in the eighth on an RBI double by
Michael Barnes and on a run-scoring single by
Josh Oswald, but that wouldn't be enough.
Each team finished with eight hits. Ripon was led by Oswald and
Isiah Ramos, who each recorded two base knocks.
The day's second game again saw Ripon strike first with a run in the top of the first on a single by
Hector Aguinaga. Beloit would get on the board with two runs in the bottom of the first, but Ripon answered with an RBI single up the middle by
Tyler Nelson to tie the score.
Beloit again took the lead with a run in the third, but Ripon scored two the following inning on a sac fly by Nelson and an RBI single by Taranto, giving the Red Hawks a 4-3 advantage. Beloit continued the see-saw battle with two runs in the bottom of the fourth as they scored on a pair of fielder's choices. That would be all the scoring in the contest, despite a late rally by the Red Hawks that loaded the bases with one out in the top of the ninth. Beloit would retire the next two batters however, to complete the sweep.
Aguinaga led Ripon with a career-high five hits in five at-bats, while Ramos, Taranto, Barnes, and Nelson each finished with two base knocks.
Brice Swick (1-4) suffered the hard-luck loss, allowing just two earned runs in seven innings, while striking out four and walking none.
Ripon will bring their 2017 season to a close Sunday when they'll host Beloit for another doubleheader on what will also be the Red Hawks' annual Senior Day. The first game will begin at 1 p.m. at Francis Field in Ripon.
