Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

First-Place Red Hawks Continue To Roll

RIPON, Wis. - Ripon's women's basketball team won their sixth consecutive game Saturday afternoon, earning the season sweep over Grinnell College with a 63-47 victory to remain alone atop the Midwest Conference standings. The Red Hawks, who never trailed after the first quarter, outscored the Pioneers 40-16 in the paint and 17-3 on second chance points. Ripon also limited Grinnell to just 33 percent (14-43) shooting in the game, while dominating the boards to a tune of a 49-27 rebounding margin.

Ripon (11-5, 8-1 MWC) scored the first five points of the game and led 9-2 just three and a half minutes into the contest, with six of those points coming from Maggie Oimoen. Grinnell (7-7, 4-5 MWC) then scored seven consecutive points to tie the score, and would take their first and only lead of the game just minutes later, but Ripon scored the final six minutes of the quarter, including a running jumper at the buzzer by Molly Cullinane, to take a 17-14 lead into the second period. The Red Hawks opened up that lead in the next period, outscoring Grinnell 18-8 in the quarter to boast a 35-22 halftime lead.

Grinnell scored the first four points of the third quarter to cut Ripon's lead to single digits, but a basket by Jonalee Elliott gave the Red Hawks a double-digit lead for good with eight and a half minutes remaining in the period. Ripon would lead by as many as 24 points in the fourth quarter.

Oimoen led Ripon with 20 points on 10-of-16 shooting, to go along with nine rebounds (four offensive), and two blocked shots. Elliott added eight points, six rebounds, and three steals. Ten different Red Hawks scored at least two points.

Grinnell was led by Tyria Heath's 21 points, while the MWC's leading scorer Kayla Morrissey added 16 points and five rebounds.

Ripon will be in action again on Wednesday when they'll travel to Beloit College. That game will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Beloit, Wis., and can be seen live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/.
