Ripon Suffers First Conference Loss In Final Seconds

DE PERE, Wis. - After winning their first three conference games to start the season, Ripon's women's basketball team suffered its first setback Saturday afternoon, falling to St. Norbert in the final seconds by a score of 49-47. St. Norbert capitalized off 15 Ripon turnovers, which they turned into 18 points, while the Green Knights only committed nine turnovers in the contest.

Jesi Nay scored the first basket of the game, giving Ripon a 3-0 lead in the opening minute on her first of three 3-pointers. The Red Hawks would hold that lead until the final quarter, leading by as many as 10 in the opening period. Ripon (3-6, 3-1 MWC) entered halftime with a 26-23 lead, but that lead was cut to one on the opening possession of the third quarter.

The Red Hawks maintained that lead, entering the final quarter with a 37-36 advantage. St. Norbert (2-5, 1-3 MWC) scored the first basket of the fourth period, giving them their first lead of the game with nine minutes remaining. The lead changed hands four more times in the quarter, with Ripon taking a two-point lead on a Laurissa Johnson layup with two minutes on the clock. After a pair of St. Norbert free throws tied the score at 47, Sarah Ratajczyk gave the Green Knights a two-point lead on a layup with just three seconds left. A last second 3-pointer by the Red Hawks was no good, giving St. Norbert their first conference win of the season.

Ripon was led by Maggie Oimoen's 14th career double-double and fifth in the last six games. She recorded team-highs of 16 points and 11 rebounds in 21 minutes. Nay added 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting, including 3-of-8 from 3-point range. The Red Hawks converted 39 percent (19-49) of their shots on the night, while out-rebounding St. Norbert 35-28.

The Green Knights also converted 39 percent of their shots (21-54). They were led by Sarah Neumann's 10 points and five rebounds in 17 minutes off the bench. Christine Olijnyk added 10 points on 4-of-12 shooting. SNC converted all five of their free throws, while Ripon shot 67 percent (6-9) from the line.

Ripon will try to get back to their winning ways Tuesday in a non-conference battle at UW-Stout. That game will begin at 7 p.m. in Menomonie, Wis., and can be heard live at https://wmeq.iheart.com/, with LiveStats available at http://www2.uwstout.edu/content/athletics/wbb/live/xlive.htm.
