Red Hawks Drop Pair of Closely Contested Contests

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Ripon's baseball team lost two games by a combined three runs Sunday, losing to Rutgers-Camden 2-0, before dropping a 6-5 decision against Webster University in the nightcap.

In the first game of the day, Neither team scored until the fourth inning when Rutgers-Camden (4-1) broke into the scoring column with the only runs of the game on a two-run home run by Brandon Cornelius, who deposited the ball over the left field fence. Both runs were unearned, as the batter prior to Cornelius' at-bat reached on an error.

Austin Fox (0-1) suffered the tough-luck loss, pitching six innings without allowing an earned run on eight hits, while striking out two with zero walks. Ripon (0-3) finished with six hits, with two coming from freshman Tyler Munoz. Josh Oswald recorded the team's only extra base hit, doubling to lead off the fifth inning.

In the day's second game, Ripon jumped on the scoreboard early against Webster (5-2), plating two runs in the bottom of the first. Nick Taranto broke a scoreless tie with a sac fly, to score Tyler Nelson, while the second run scored on a wild pitch that allowed Riley Erickson to cross the plate.

That lead stood until the third inning when Webster scored four runs on four hits. After a triple led off the inning, the next batter doubled down the left fileld line. Two batters later, an RBI single tied the score, before another triple scored the third run of the inning and a wild pitch allowed the fourth run to score.

Ripon got one of those runs back in the fourth to cut Webster's lead to one on an RBI double by Kyle Rogers, which scored Oswald from second. Webster then scored one run in the fifth and another in the sixth on a single and double, respectively, to take a 6-3 lead in the sixth inning.

The Red Hawks nearly put a comeback together, scoring one run in each of the next two innings. Eric Hietpass scored on a passed ball in the seventh, while Keegan Johnston drove in a run with a double in the eighth, allowing Erickson to score to cut the lead to one. Ripon was sent down in order in the ninth however, to end the game.

Brian Brown (0-1) took the loss, striking out six batters in seven innings of work. Ripon finished with 10 hits, with two apiece coming from Nelson and Oswald. Four of Ripon's hits were doubles.

The Red Hawks will be in action again on Monday when they'll face Franklin & Marshall in a doubleheader, with the first game beginning at 4 p.m. Central Time at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Fla.
