AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Ripon dropped both games of Monday's doubleheader against Franklin & Marshall in two vastly different games, losing the first game 4-2, before falling in the nightcap 16-8.
Franklin & Marshall (4-2-1) jumped out to an early lead in game one, scoring on a sac fly in the bottom of the first. They added three more runs on three hits in the third, scoring twice on a triple by J.J. Freeman and once more on an RBI single by Dan Marano.
Ripon (0-5) got on the board in the fourth inning when
Riley Erickson doubled to right center, allowing
Tyler Nelson to score. The Red Hawks added another run in the sixth on a sac fly by Erickson, which also scored Nelson, but that was all the runs they could muster in that contest.Â
David Knapp (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on six hits in six innings of work, while also striking out five batters.
Eric Hietpas led the Red Hawks with two hits in two at-bats.
The second game saw both teams combine for 24 runs on 29 hits. Ripon took the initial lead with three runs in the bottom of the second, breaking a scoreless tie on an RBI single by Hietpas before adding two more runs on a single up the middle by Nelson.
That lead didn't last long, as Franklin & Marshall scored five runs in the top of the third, with the big blow coming on a two-run triple by Matthew Kann. The Diplomats broke the game wide open in the fifth, scoring 10 runs in the inning on eight hits, while also helped by two Ripon errors.
Josh Oswald helped get one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single to left. The Red Hawks added three more runs in the next inning, scoring on a fielding error, an RBI double by Erickson, and a sac fly from Oswald. Each team scored once more in the seventh inning, with Ripon's run coming on an Hietpass' second RBI of the game.
The Red Hawks finished with 10 hits, with Nelson, Erickson, Oswald, and Hietpass each recording a pair of base knocks.
Michael Barnes and
Ben Folger also recorded a hit in the game.
Tuesday is Ripon's off day, but they'll be back in action Wednesday against William Paterson at 12:45 p.m. Central Time. That game will be played at Lake Myrtle Park Field Eight in Auburndale, Fla.
