CLERMONT, Fla. - Heading into Wednesday's off day, Ripon's softball team split a pair of games at The Spring Games on Tuesday. The Red Hawks began the day with a dominating 11-3 win over Westfield State in six innings, which saw them collect 16 hits, before losing 8-5 against Endicott.
In the first game of the day, Ripon (4-8) was aggressive from the first pitch, scoring four runs on five hits in the opening inning, which saw all nine Ripon batters come to the plate.
Isabella Osborn broke a scoreless tie with a one-out single down the left field line. Two more runs scored on a single to right center off the bat of
Teara Morgenroth, while the inning's other run came on a wild pitch that scored
Lexi Reetz from third base. Ripon scored again in the second on an RBI groundout by
Julia Sanchez, allowing
Micaela Encarnacion to score.
After Westfield State (1-4) got on the board with a run in the top of the fourth, Ripon scored two in the bottom of that inning on an error and an RBI single by Osborn. Westfield State got both of those runs back in the sixth, but Ripon put the game away with four runs on five hits in the bottom of that inning. Osborn collected two more RBI on a single to left, while
Brooke Bauer drove in a run with a single of her own. Reetz ended the game when she scored on a Westfield error.
The top four batters in Ripon's order were a combined 11-for-15 (.733). Robinson led the way, going 4-for-4 at the dish, which ties a school record for single game hits, while Encarnacion and Osborn each recorded three hits. Osborn posted a game-high four RBI, with Encarnacion and Robinson each scoring three times. Morgenroth and Bauer also had two hits apiece, while combining for three RBI. Reetz (3-3) earned the win, allowing just one earned run and four hits, while striking out eight in six innings. That moves Reetz into third place in school history with 277 career strikeouts.
In the day's second game, Ripon fell behind Endicott 1-0 in the first inning, before taking the lead with three runs on five hits in the third. The Red Hawks got on the board with a two-run double by Robinson, while Morgenroth added an RBI single up the middle. Endicott (5-0) then tied the score with two runs in the third on a pair of RBI singles.
Ripon grabbed the lead again in the fourth on an RBI double by
Addison Lindsey, who would later score on a throwing error. After Endicott scored once in the fourth to cut Ripon's lead to one, the Gulls took the lead for good with four runs on five hits in the sixth. The big blow that inning came on a three-run homer with two outs to break the 5-5 tie.
The Red Hawks recorded nine hits in the game, led by two apiece from Robinson and Lindsey, who doubled twice and scored a team-best two runs.Â
Endicott recorded 14 hits in the game, with three apiece coming from Emily Sharpe and Madison Mucci. Jamie Hopgood recorded four RBI in the contest.
