APPLETON, Wis. - After losing their first match on day one of the ACM Tournament Friday to Luther, the Ripon College volleyball team rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win their second match in a thrilling five set affair, handing Carleton their first loss of the season.
Ripon began the day falling in four sets to Luther (3-3) by a score of 25-15, 25-17, 17-25, 25-22. The second match looked like it was headed in the same direction after Ripon (3-3) lost the first two sets to Carleton (4-1) by a score of 25-19 and 27-25, but the Red Hawks battled back to win the third and fourth 25-15 and 25-18, respectively. Ripon then fell behind 6-4 in the fifth and final set, but again put a rally together to take the deciding set by a score of 15-11.
In their first match, Ripon posted a team hitting percentage of .047, while Luther hit .228, recording double digit kills in all four sets.
Emily Allard led Ripon with team-highs of 12 kills and four service aces, while adding 12 digs.
Olivia Heck led the team with 34 assists, while
Kendra Holte paced the Red Hawks with 13 digs.
The second match of the day saw the Red Hawks improve their hitting percentage to .222, while holding Carleton to a hitting percentage of .195. Allard and freshman
Inesha Wiseman each finished with 12 kills to lead the way, while
Kaylie Marks added 11 kills and an outstanding hitting percentage of .688.
Aubreigh Zimmerman also recorded 11 kills for the Red Hawks. Heck led the team in both assists (41) and digs (21), while Marks added two blocks, including one solo.
Ripon will now try to build on that comeback victory on Saturday's second day of the ACM Tournament. The Red Hawks will play St. Olaf at Noon, before taking on Macalester at 4 p.m. at Alexander Gymnasium in Appleton, Wis.
