Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Ripon Defeats Cornell Behind Stifling Defense

RIPON, Wis. - Ripon's women's basketball team held Cornell to just 26 percent (14-54) shooting, including 19 percent (4-21) from 3-point range, en route to a 59-36 victory over the Rams. Cornell had just 14 points at halftime, and never scored more than 11 in a quarter against the Midwest Conference's number one ranked scoring defense. Ripon meanwhile shot 43 percent (24-56) from the field and 39 percent (5-13) from 3-point range.

Cornell (4-8, 4-3 MWC) scored the game's first basket, a 3-pointer by Rose Shimaoka, but Ripon (7-7, 6-1 MWC) would score the next nine points, and would never trail again. The Red Hawks led 13-9 after one quarter of play, while taking a 25-14 lead into halftime.

Ripon led by double digits for the entirety of the second half, taking their largest lead of 26 mid-way through the fourth quarter on a 3-pointer from Shannon Sorbo. The Red Hawks dominated the boards, out-rebounding the Rams by a 45-29 margin.

Laurissa Johnson led Ripon with a career-high 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting, to go along with six rebounds and four assists. Maggie Oimoen added 11 points and 11 rebounds for her 16th career double-double, while also becoming just the eighth player in program history to score more than 1,100 career points. Alyassa Burgess also chipped in with seven points, seven rebounds, three blocked shots, and two steals.

Cornell was led by Kandis O'Donnell's 13 points and five rebounds. Yasmin Gupta added eight points off the bench, while Shimaoka scored seven, to go along with a team-high three assists.

With the win, Ripon now moves into a three-way tie (with Monmouth and Lake Forest) for first place in the MWC standings. The Red Hawks will try to extend their conference-best winning streak to five games on Saturday when they'll travel to Illinois College. That game will begin at 1 p.m. in Jacksonville, Ill., and can be seen live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/.
