RIPON, Wis. - Ripon's women's basketball team erased a six-point deficit in the final minute, but ultimately would lose 52-51 to Edgewood Tuesday night. Ripon won the rebound battle 39-36, which helped result in 18 second-chance points.
The teams played evenly during the first quarter, with Ripon (2-1) taking the largest lead of the period on a layup by
Alyassa Burgess to give the Red Hawks a five-point advantage. After leading by four entering the second quarter, Edgewood (6-0) battled back to tie the score at 23, but Ripon grabbed the lead back on a
Caitie Carpenter free throw and would lead by one at halftime.
Edgewood's Lexi Walter made the first basket of the second half to give the Eagles the lead, as Edgewood scored the first 11 points of the third quarter to take command of the contest. The Eagles led by 11 entering the fourth quarter, which began with a 12-2 run by the Red Hawks, cutting that lead to a single point. Edgewood would go up by six on a Walter free throw with less than a minute and a half remaining. Carpenter then made a free throw for the Red Hawks, while missing the second, but
Alison Leslie scooped up the board and made a layup while getting fouled. Her free throw was also rebounded and put up by
Bonnie Jensen, who was fouled and converted the three-point play to tie the score at 51 with less than a minute remaining. Edgewood's Alyssa Lemirande then converted one of two free throws with half a minute to play, which proved to be the winner.
Ripon was led by Burgess' third career double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds (four offensive), while Jensen added 12 points and eight boards. Carpenter also chipped in with 10 points, five rebounds, and three assists. The Red Hawks shot 35 percent (21-60) from the field, while converting 60 percent (9-15) of their free throws.
Walter and Lemirande led Edgewood with 11 points apiece, while Diamond Pikulyk had 10 points and five rebounds off the bench. The Eagles made 36 percent (19-53) of their shots and 72 percent (13-18) of their free throws.
