Ripon Wins Doehling-Heselton Trophy For 20th Consecutive Season

APPLETON, Wis. - The Ripon College football team defeated Lawrence University Saturday for the 20th consecutive season, winning 44-20 behind 20 fourth-quarter points to retain the Doehling-Heselton trophy for one more year in what is the oldest college football rivalry in the state of Wisconsin.

Ripon (4-5, 3-2 MWC) started the scoring on the game's first drive, going 72 yards on six plays, which was capped off by a seven-yard Walter Bryant touchdown. Cormac Madigan added a three-yard touchdown run for the Red Hawks later in the quarter, before Lawrence got on the board on an 18-yard TD pass from Billy Wallisch to Cameron Wicks. The Vikings would score their second touchdown in the second quarter on a three-yard pass from Wallisch to Nick Pastrone, but the two-point conversion would be failed. Ripon took a 17-13 lead into halftime after Kyle Jobke connected on a 28-yard field goal in the final minutes of the half.

Lawrence (1-8, 0-5 MWC) would take their first lead of the game five minutes into the third quarter when Wallisch found Tanner Morris for an eight-yard touchdown pass. That lead lasted three minutes until Madigan found paydirt from 21 yards out, giving the Red Hawks a 24-20 lead entering the fourth and final quarter. From there, it was all Red Hawks, as they scored three more touchdowns in the final 12 minutes, finding the end zone on TD runs from Austin Bunders, Madigan, and Tyler VanDeVelde.

Ripon out-gained Lawrence in total yardage 493-405, while rushing for 440 yards. They were led by Cormac Madigan's 259 yards on 27 carries (9.6 ypc), which is the fifth-highest single game rushing total in program history. VanDeVelde added 65 yards on the ground, while Bryant chipped in with 49. Defensively, Ripon intercepted four passes, including two by Cameron Gruenwald, giving him 14 interceptions in his career, which ranks seventh in school history.

Lawrence was led by Ethan Simmons' 80 yards on six carries (13.3 ypc), while Wasonu Allen gained 78 yards on the ground. Wallisch finished with 193 yards passing, while Pastrone and Morris each caught six passes for 96 and 46 yards, respectively.

Ripon will finish their 2019 season on Saturday when they'll travel to Illinois College. That game will begin at Noon in Jacksonville, Ill., and is a rematch of a game earlier this season that was won 28-25 by the Blue Boys.
