Ripon's men's tennis team split a pair of matches over the weekend, falling at home to Calvin College on Friday by a score of 9-0, before picking up their first win of the season with a 5-4 victory at Lakeland University on Saturday.
In Friday's match, Ripon's most competitive singles flight came at the number four position, where
Marcus Austin lost 6-3, 6-1. Austin also teamed up with
Drew Jorgensen at number one doubles, falling by a score of 8-2.
On Saturday, the Red Hawks (1-3) defeated Lakeland behind the play, Jorgensen, who earned his first collegiate victory with a 6-0, 6-0 win at the number one singles flight. Jorgensen and Austin also teamed up at the top doubles flight to win 8-4. Ripon's other singles victories came at the number three and six flights, where
Preston Wurtz and
Junmo Kwon won by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores, respectively. Wurtz and
Daniel Garcia also earned an 8-0 win at number three doubles.
Ripon will now have a few weeks off from competition, before opening their conference season on March 30 with home matches against Grinnell and Illinois College. Both of those matches will be played at Willmore Center in Ripon.
