KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Ripon's softball team brought their 2019 Spring Trip to a close Friday afternoon, defeating Manchester University 9-7, before losing to Springfield College 11-3 in six innings.
In the day's first game, Ripon (5-9) tied a season-high with nine runs on 12 hits. They jumped on the board early and never trailed in the contest, plating four runs in the top of the first and two in the second.
Isabella Osborn got the Red Hawks on the board with a sacrifice fly, scoring
Emyli Kreiser. After a
Kayley Grabowski walk,
Taylor Natzke ripped a three-run double to left center to put Ripon up by four. The team's second-inning runs came on a bases loaded walk to
Lexi Reetz and an RBI single by Osborn.
Manchester (4-4) got on the board with a run in the bottom of the second, but Ripon continued to put their foot on the gas with two more runs in the fifth, scoring two runs on a Manchester error. After Manchester matched that with two runs in the bottom of the inning, the Red Hawks scored once more in the sixth on an RBI single by
Julia Sanchez to put Ripon up 9-4. Manchester would make things interesting, scoring once in the sixth and three more times in the seventh, but
Lexi Reetz finished off her seventh complete game of the season by leaving two runners stranded when the final out was recorded.
Reetz (5-2) allowed six earned runs in her seven innings, with 10 strikeouts. At the plate, Ripon was led by
Micaela Encarnacion's 3-for-5 performance, while Sanchez, Natzke, and
Camryn Hamilton each recorded two base knocks. Hamilton and Kreiser tied for a team-high with two runs scored apiece.
The day's second game saw Ripon fall behind early, as Springfield (6-4) scored twice in the top of the first, and again in the second. Ripon cut that lead to one in the third on an RBI double down the left field line by Kreiser and a run-scoring single up the middle by Osborn.
Springfield would get those two runs back in the fourth, before tacking on another in the fifth to take a 6-2 advantage. Ripon added another run in the fifth on an RBI single off the bat of Sanchez, but that's as close as they would get the rest of the game. Springfield ended the game with five runs on four hits in the sixth inning.
Ripon finished with nine hits, including two apiece by Kreiser and
Cortney Bols. Kreiser's two base knocks both went for doubles, which is tied for second in program history for a single game. She also scored two of the team's three runs, while driving in one.
The Red Hawks will now return home to Wisconsin, where they will travel to Concordia (Wis.) for a doubleheader on Wednesday at 3 p.m. in Mequon, Wis.
