Ripon Salvages Split At Cornell

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - In a tale of two games on Saturday, Ripon split a doubleheader with Cornell, losing the first game 14-2 in five innings, before winning game two by a score of 9-2.

In the first game of the day, Cornell (14-10, 4-4 MWC) jumped all over Ripon (7-17, 2-6 MWC) early with a five-run first inning. The Rams would score at least one run in four of the game's five innings, as they added a run in the second and six more in the third, before capping their scoring with two in the fifth. Ripon's two runs came in the fourth frame, which was the only inning in which Cornell didn't score. Claire Luebke and Isabella Osborn each recorded sac flys in that inning for the Red Hawks.

Ripon finished with two hits, with one apiece coming from Julia Sanchez and Cortney Bols. Cornell's 14 runs came on 10 hits, as they had two players with at least two hits in the game.

The Red Hawks' bats then came alive in the second game, as they got out to an early lead with two runs in the first on RBI singles by Emyli Kreiser and Bols. Ripon added to that lead in the second on an RBI groundout by Sanchez, which scored Teara Morgenroth. They would score three more runs in the third, as Morgenroth and Lexi Reetz each collected an RBI in the inning. THe Red Hawks put the game out of reach in the fifth, as Reetz drove in another run, followed by a two-run home run from Micaela Encarnacion, her second homer of the season and fourth of her career.

In addition to her two RBI, Reetz was also dominant in the circle, allowing two runs on seven hits in seven innings, while striking out 10. That leaves her just seven strikeouts shy of the second-highest total in program history, as she now has 441 in her career. Encarnacion and Kreiser each finished with two hits, while Morgenroth scored three runs, which is tied for sixth in program history for a single game.

Ripon is scheduled to be in action again on Monday when they'll host Lake Forest College in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. Live Video and LiveStats will be available for that twinbill at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/.
