Ripon Sweeps Chicago, Extends Win Streak To Eight Games

RIPON, Wis. - The Ripon College baseball team extended their win streak to eight games Friday afternoon with a pair of wins against Midwest Conference Preseason favorite University of Chicago. That also improves Ripon's home record to a perfect 7-0 on the season, winning game one 5-2, before also taking the second game by a score of 3-1.

Ripon (13-10, 7-3 MWC) never trailed in the first game, taking an early lead with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Jacob Pankratz got the Red Hawks on the board with an RBI groundout, before Riley Erickson scored on a wild pitch. After Chicago (13-6, 2-2 MWC) scored two runs in the third to tie the game, Ripon grabbed the lead back with two more runs in the sixth, scoring on an Erickson RBI single and an error, which allowed Joey Garza to cross the plate. Nick Taranto added an RBI single for the Red Hawks in the seventh to cap the scoring.

Taranto, Garza, and Erickson all finished with two hits to lead the Red Hawks. Brice Swick (4-2) earned the win, allowing just one earned run on nine hits and striking out six in a complete game. He also recorded 15 groundouts in the contest.

The second game saw Chicago get on the board first with an RBI groundout in the top of the first. That lead would last until the fourth when Ripon pushed two runs across on RBI singles by Pankratz and Tyler Nelson. The Red Hawks added an insurance run in the eighth on an RBI double off the bat of Nick Terrell.

Ripon finished with 11 hits, led by two apiece from Garza, Erickson, Pankratz, and Terrell. Brian Brown (2-2) earned the win, allowing one run on just two hits, while striking out seven. Brody Marks picked up his second save of the season with three scoreless innings of relief, which saw him yield just one hit.

These same two teams will be back at it again on Saturday with a doubleheader in Chicago.
