Ripon Opens Conference Season With A Split

DE PERE, Wis. - Ripon opened their 2019 conference season by splitting a pair of games at St. Norbert on Tuesday. The Red Hawks won the first game 2-0, as Lexi Reetz tossed her fifth complete game shutout of the season. They couldn't complete the sweep however, narrowly losing the second game 7-6.

In the day's first game, the only scoring came in the top of the fourth when Cortney Bols drove in both runs with a single to right field, allowing Reetz and Julia Sanchez to score.

From there, Reetz (6-3) held the Green Knights at bay, scattering six hits, while striking out four batters and walking just one. Ripon finished with six hits, coming from six different players.

The day's second game was a much higher scoring affair, with Ripon jumping on the board first with a three-run first. Micaela Encarnacion scored the game's first run on a sac fly by Sanchez. Taylor Natzke then drove in a run with a double to left, while Bols drove her in with a single in the very next at-bat.

Ripon would push across another run in the second on an RBI double by Sanchez, before St. Norbert got on the board with three runs in the bottom of that inning. Ripon added to their lead in the third on an RBI by Camryn Hamilton, but St. Norbert tied the score at five with two runs in the bottom of the third.

The Red Hawks grabbed the lead back in the fifth on a leadoff homer off the bat of Bols, marking the first home run of her career. St. Norbert matched that with a run in the bottom of the inning to tie it up once more. Then in the sixth, the Green Knights took the lead for good. Despite Ripon throwing out a runner at home on an SNC double, they were awarded the run due to interference, which proved to be the difference in the game.

Ripon finished the game with 11 hits, led by three from Bols, who also scored twice and drove in two more. Sanchez, Emyli Kreiser, and Claire Luebke each finished with two hits.

Ripon will be in action again on Wednesday when they'll take on Finlandia in a non-conference battle. That doubleheader will begin at 3 p.m. in Ripon, and can be seen live with LiveStats at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/.
