MONMOUTH, Ill. - Monmouth defeated Ripon's softball team in both games of Sunday's doubleheader, as the Red Hawks lost the first game 4-2, before dropping the second 5-1.
In the day's first game, Ripon (6-16, 1-5 MWC) struck first with a run in the top of the second on an RBI double by
Isabella Osborn, scoring
Kayley Grabowski from first base. Monmouth matched that with an RBI single in the bottom of that inning, and would take the lead with two more runs the following inning.
After Monmouth took a 4-1 lead in the fourth, the Red Hawks mounted a comeback in the top of the seventh, which was led off by a walk to
Cortney Bols. She would later score on a wild pitch, but Ripon would hit into the final out with the tying run at the plate.
Ripon finished with two hits in the game, coming from Osborn and
Claire Luebke.
Lexi Reetz (6-5) suffered the loss, allowing three earned runs on five hits, while striking out three without walking a batter.
In the day's second game, Monmouth never trailed, taking the lead with three runs in the bottom of the third. The Fighting Scots added two more runs in the fifth, before Ripon got on the board on an RBI double by Bols in the top of the sixth for their only run.
The Red Hawks finished with four hits in the contest, coming from Reetz, Bols,
Julia Sanchez, and
Camryn Hamilton.
Ripon will be in action again on Wednesday when they are scheduled to host Lake Forest College in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. Those games can be seen live at
