Ripon's women's basketball team moved their Midwest Conference record to a perfect 4-0 over the weekend with road wins against Knox and Illinois College. The Red Hawks defeated Knox 65-54 on Friday, before opening their offense for an 82-72 win at Illinois College, which saw freshman
Alison Leslie score 33 points on a school-record nine 3-pointers.
Leslie was locked in all weekend, scoring 20 points with four 3-pointers in Friday's win at Knox (7-3, 2-1 MWC). That was part of the reason the Red Hawks (8-3, 4-0 MWC) shot a season-best 49 percent (24-49) from the field, including 46 percent (5-11) from 3-point range. They also held Knox to just 28 percent (18-65) from the field.
Ripon never trailed in the first half, getting out to a 12-point lead after one quarter. Knox cut that lead to single digits in the second quarter, but Ripon extended that lead to 11 on an
Alyassa Burgess basket just before halftime.
With the Red Hawks leading by 12 with under seven minutes left in the third quarter, Knox scored 13 consecutive points to take a one-point lead with two minutes remaining in the period.
Danyelle Waldera then connected on a 3-pointer to give Ripon a 43-41 lead entering the final quarter. Leslie then scored the first eight points of the fourth all by herself, including a pair of 3-pointers to give Ripon some breathing room for the remainder of the game.
In addition to her 20 points, Leslie recorded six rebounds (two offensive), three assists, and two steals. Burgess chipped in with 14 points, six rebounds, three assists, and five blocked shots, which is tied for ninth in school history for a single game.
Knox was led by Jarrelyn Mccall's 16 points, while Kyra Huffman posted 11 points and 11 rebounds (six offensive).
Leslie continued her hot shooting in Saturday's win at Illinois College, making 10-of-15 shots, including 9-of-12 from 3-point range, while also making all four of her free throws. In addition to her scoring output, she also finished with four rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
Ripon never trailed after halftime, leading by as many as 14 points.
Bonnie Jensen and
Skyylar Brescia each scored 12 points in the game, while Burgess added 11 points, seven rebounds (four offensive), and three assists.
Jordan Bukouricz led Ripon's defense with four steals.
Illinois College was led by Grace Yaunches' 22 points on six 3-pointers. Lilly Pepper added 20 points and 10 rebounds on 8-of-11 shooting, while Megan Price scored 17 points on five 3-pointers.
The Red Hawks will be in action again on Wednesday when they'll host Lawrence University at 7:30 p.m. That game can be seen live atÂ
