ROCHESTER, Minn. - Ripon's softball team opened their 2020 season Saturday night at the Rochester Dome Games, losing to Gustavus Adolphus 5-2 and to St. Olaf by a score of 6-0.
In their first game, Gustavus Adolphus (3-3) broke a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth inning with a trio of runs, all three of which came unearned. The first run of the game came on a Ripon error, while Gustavus added a pair of RBI singles later in the inning. Ripon would get on the scoreboard in the bottom of that inning, as
Emyli Kreiser drove both runs in on a single. Gustavus would get both of those runs back in the seventh on an RBI single and a run-scoring groundout.
Ripon (0-2) out-hit Gustavus Adolphus 8-7.
Claire Luebke led the Red Hawks with two hits, while allowing zero earned runs on four hits in six innings in the circle, suffering the hard-luck loss.
The Red Hawks followed that up with a 6-0 loss to St. Olaf in the nightcap, which saw the Oles out-hit Ripon 10-4. St. Olaf scored their first runs in the bottom of the first, scoring on an RBI groundout and a Ripon error. They would add to their lead in the third on a passed ball, while scoring two more runs in the fourth on an RBI double and a run-scoring single. The Oles capped the scoring with a run in the sixth on a steal of home plate.
Isabella Osborn led Ripon with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate.
Cortney Bols (0-1) allowed two earned runs on eight hits in five innigns of work, striking out three batters.
The Red Hawks will be in action again on Sunday when they'll continue play in the Rochester Dome Tournament. Ripon will play Luther and Macalester at 2 and 4 p.m., respectively.
