RIPON, Wis. - Off to their best start to a season in 11 years entering Saturday's game, Ripon's football team suffered its first loss of the season, a 42-7 setback against fellow unbeaten Lake Forest College. The Foresters gained 399 yards of total offense, while limiting the Red Hawks to 129 yards, including just 33 on the ground.
Neither team could get much going early on, until Lake Forest (6-0, 5-0 MWC) took advantage of a Ripon miscue, recovering a fumble inside Ripon's 30-yard line. That set up a three-play drive that was capped off with an Armaini Brown 11-yard touchdown run to give the Forester's the first and only lead of the game. Lake Forest doubled that lead in the opening minutes of the second quarter when Tre Stewart found Robby Mills for an eight-yard touchdown pass. Stewart would also score with his legs, capping off a 12-play, 73-yard drive with a nine-yard TD scamper. He would throw another TD later in the quarter to AJ Jackson, who made a circus catch in the end zone for a 25-yard score to put LFC up 28-0 at halftime.
Lake Forest would continue to pour things on in the second half, taking the opening possession 65 yards in eight plays, capped off by an 11-yard touchdown run by Damon Bonds. Ripon (5-1, 4-1 MWC) would score their only points of the contest in the final minutes of the third quarter on a nine-yard TD pass from
Jarrett Zibert to
Kaipo Magsayo. The Foresters put a bow on the game in the fourth as Stewart connected with Jackson again, this time for a 56-yard TD.
Cormac Madigan led Ripon with 49 yards on 14 carries. Zibert completed nine passes for 96 yards, while Magsayo was his leading receiver with four grabs for 41 yards and the score.
Brad Guell led all players with 14 tackles (nine solo), including two for a loss and one of the team's two sacks.
Dylon Ross recorded the Red Hawks' other sack, while also registering six tackles.
Dionisio Herrera recorded the Red Hawks defense's only interception.
Bonds led the Foresters with 76 yards on 15 carries (5.1 ypc). Stewart completed 14-of-21 passes for 198 yards, while Jackson caught three passes for 80 yards.
Ripon will try to rebound next weekend against another tough opponent when they'll travel to University of Chicago. That game will begin at 2 p.m. in Chicago, and can be seen live at https://athletics.uchicago.edu/sports/fball/live-video.
