CHICAGO, Ill. - University of Chicago defeated Ripon's football team 38-14 Saturday afternoon, as the Midwest Conference's top rushing offense out-gained the Red Hawks 325-111 on the ground. The Maroons also won the turnover battle 2-0, scoring seven points off turnovers.
The scoring was slow out of the gate, with a Will Goodman field goal being the only points of the first quarter, as he put Chicago up 3-0. The Maroons (6-1, 5-1 MWC) added to that lead on the first play of the second quarter when the MWC's leading rusher Nick D'Ambrose scampered 45 yards for a touchdown. Two and a half minutes later, Chicago found the end zone again when Zack Olson caught a 17-yard TD from Phillip Martini. Martini would find Elliott Grays for an 11-yard score later in the period to put Chicago up 24-0. Ripon cut into that lead just three minutes before halftime on a three-yard touchdown pass from
Jarrett Zibert to
Kapena Magsayo.
Chicago added to their lead with just under four minutes left in the third quarter when D'Ambrose found paydirt once more from 15 yards out. Ripon (5-2, 4-2 MWC) would get those points back early in the fourth quarter when Zibert connected with
Cormac Madigan for a 33-yard touchdown. Three minutes later, Chicago blocked a punt and returned it 20 yards for a touchdown to put the game on ice.
Ripon was led by
Jaylend Brown's 36 yards on just six carries (6.0 ypc), while Zibert added 35 yards on seven totes (5.0 ypc), to go along with 138 passing yards.
Masyn Ulrich led Ripon's receivers with four catches for 45 yards. Defensively, the Red Hawks were led by
Matt Johnson's 13 tackles. They also recorded three sacks, with one apiece coming from
Clay Ritschard and
Zach Gustafson.
D'Ambrose continued his bid for conference player of the year honors, gaining 281 yards on 32 carries (8.8 ypc), including the two touchdowns. Phillip Martini completed 12-of-30 passes for 152 yards, while Matt Quaglia led Chicago with four receptions for 63 yards. Will Skowronski led Chicago's defense with 11 tackles, two sacks, and a forced fumble.
Ripon will try to rebound next weekend when they'll travel to Beloit College. That game will begin Saturday at 1 p.m. in Beloit, Wis., and can be seen live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/.
