OSHKOSH, Wis. - Ripon's men's basketball team lost to UW-Stout by a score of 76-49 Wednesday night in the first day of UW-Oshkosh's BSN Sports Winter Classic. The Red Hawks converted 52 percent (13-25) of their first half shots, but went cold from the field after halftime, making just 19 percent (5-27) of their shots.
Despite the final score, the lead changed hands seven times in the first half. UW-Stout (10-2) then took control of the game with a 10-0 run to take an eight point lead with six minutes remaining in the half. Ripon (7-4) would cut the lead to six on a jumper by
Braeden Thies with three and a half minutes on the clock, before UW-Stout ended the half on an 11-4 run to take a 43-30 lead at intermission.
UW-Stout began the second half on an 8-2 run to open up a 19-point advantage with 15 and a half minutes remaining. Ripon would pull within 15 on a 3-pointer by
Owen Theune with nine minutes left, but that's as close as the Red Hawks would get the rest of the way.
David DeValk led Ripon with 11 points, five rebounds, and two blocked shots, while
Ryan Steffes also scored 11 points, to go along with four rebounds. Theune added eight points and six rebounds, while Mahone chipped in with seven points and seven boards.
UW-Stout was led by Lovell Williams' 22 points, three rebounds, five assists, and four steals. Luke Geiger added 13 points, while Armani Tinsley scored 10, to go along with four steals.
Ripon will be in action again on Thursday when they'll face #5 UW-Oshkosh in the second and final day of the BSN Sports Winter Classic. That game will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Oshkosh Arena in Oshkosh, Wis. LiveStats will be available at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/uwosh/.
