OSHKOSH, Wis. - Ripon's men's basketball team led fifth-ranked UW-Oshkosh for the first 15 minutes Thursday afternoon, before running out of steam in an 86-59 loss to the Titans at the BSN Sports Winter Classic. Ripon shot 55 percent (16-29) from the field in the first half, while converting just 28 percent (7-25) of their shots after halftime.
The two teams combined to make 21 of their first 26 shots from the field, with Ripon (7-5) taking their largest lead of the game on a layup by
Owen Theune to put the Red Hawks up by eight with six and a half minutes left in the half. UW-Oshkosh (12-1) then answered by ending the half with a 24-4 run to take a 47-35 halftime lead.
The Titans led by double digits for the entirety of the second half, leading by as many as 27 points. They shot 54 percent (32-59) in the game, including 61 percent (11-18) from 3-point range, while also converting 85 percent (11-13) of their free throws.
Ripon was led by David Galati's career-high 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting, while David DeValk and
Owen Theune each posted 10 points and five rebounds.
Ryan Steffes added nine points for the Red Hawks.
UW-Oshkosh was led by 23 points from Eddie Muench, while Quinn Steckbauer added 20 points. Eric Peterson and Hunter Plamann also chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Red Hawks will now prepare to resume conference play, as they'll host Grinnell College on Tuesday. That game will begin at 5:30 p.m. in Weiske Gymnasium, and can be seen live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/.
