Game Recap: Baseball |

Ripon Sweeps Marian (Wis.)

ASHWAUBENON, Wis. - Ripon's baseball team won both games of Friday's doubleheader against Marian University, taking the first game 8-1, before winning the second by a score of 6-5. The Red Hawks finished with five extra base hits in the two games combined, while committing just one error in the 16 innings.

Game one saw Ripon (4-9) jump on the board early with six runs in the top of the second. The Red Hawks broke a scoreless tie with an RBI groundout by Anthony Zak, before Andrew Betcher bunted home another run on a fielder's choice. Nick Terrell then stepped up to the plate and ripped a two-run homer, while Dane O'Donnell also drove in a pair of runs with a double to right center.

Ripon added to that lead in the third when Terrell singled to left, which allowed Aaron Kurcz to score. They would add another in the sixth on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Owen Greene.

The Red Hawks recorded 15 hits, led by Terrell, Kurcz, and Jake Pankratz, who recorded three apiece. O'Donnell and Keegan Johnston each recorded two hits. On the mound, Ryan Cox (2-1) hurled a complete game, allowing just one run on six hits and striking out two.

Game two saw Ripon again jump out to an early lead, scoring twice in the bottom of the first on an RBI double by Johnston and a sac fly by O'Donnell. Marian (1-5) took their first lead of the day in the second inning, which saw them score four runs, scoring two on a double and two more on a bases loaded single.

That lead lasted until the fourth when Ripon tied the score on a Johnston sac fly and a sac bunt from Pankratz. Marian grabbed the lead back in the top of the sixth with an RBI single to left field, but Ripon answered wtih two runs in the bottom of that frame. After leading off the inning with a triple, Betcher scored to tie the game on a single to left center off the bat of Terrell. After stealing second, Terrell would score the go-ahead run on a Johnston single to center.

Ripon finished with eight hits, coming from four different players, as Terrell, Johnston, Betcher, and Zach Albrent each recorded two hits. Brock Turkington (1-3) earned the victory, allowing just one run on three hits in three innings of relief, while striking out three batters. Pankratz earned his first career save, pitching a scoreless ninth, while striking out two of the four batters he faced.

The Red Hawks will now have a bit of a hiatus, before returning to action on April 3 against Beloit College in what will be Ripon's first home baseball games in 686 days. That doubleheader will begin at Noon at Francis Field in Ripon, and can be seen live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/.
