DE PERE, Wis. - Ripon's baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at St. Norbert. The Red Hawks lost the first game 7-4, before also falling in the nightcap, 9-8 in 10 innings.
The day started off great for the Red Hawks (4-13, 0-4 MWC) , as they struck first in the top of the first inning, which saw them tie an NCAA Division-III record with three sacrifice hits in the inning. Ripon's first run scored on one of those sac bunts, off the bat of
Jake Pankratz, which allowed
Nick Terrell to score. The Red Hawks added two more runs the following inning on a home run by Terrell.
St. Norbert (9-7, 3-2 MWC) would get both those runs back in the bottom of that frame, scoring on an RBI double and a run-scoring single. The Green Knights then took their first lead of the game in the sixth inning when they connected on a two-run homer of their own. Ripon tied the score on an RBI single by
Owen Greene in the top of the eighth, but three St. Norbert runs in the bottom of that inning would prove to be the difference.
Terrell led the Red Hawks with three of the team's six hits, with Pankratz, Greene, and
Dane O'Donnell each finishing with one base knock.
Andrew Kurcz started and allowed five runs on eight hits in 7.1 innings, while striking out two batters.
The day's second game saw St. Norbert take control early with two runs in the bottom of the first. Ripon then grabbed the lead in the third with a trio of runs before SNC tied it with another run in the bottom of that inning.
Ripon grabbed the lead back the following inning on an RBI single by Terrell. The Red Hawks would then add one run in both the fifth and sixth innings on a solo home run by
Keegan Johnston and an RBI double from Terrell.
After SNC scored four runs in the seventh to take an 8-7 lead, Ripon took the lead back with two runs in the eighth, scoring on a two-run single off the bat of Johnston. That lead held until the bottom of the ninth when St. Norbert tied the game on a bases loaded walk. The Green Knights would leave the bases loaded, forcing the game into the 10th inning. After Ripon was retired in order in the top of that inning, the Green Knights ended the game in the bottom half of the 10th on an RBI single.
Ripon finished the game with 13 hits, coming from just five players.
Nick Tenny,
Andrew DeMatteo, and Johnston each recorded three hits, while Terrell and
Andrew Betcher each finished with two.
The Red Hawks will be in action again on Saturday when they'll travel to Appleton, Wis. to battle Lawrence University. That doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m. and can be seen live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/.
