RIPON, Wis. – The Ripon volleyball team hosted Lawrence on Tuesday evening, coming away with a 3-0 victory to pick up the first Midwest Conference win of the year. The Red Hawks shared the wealth, as nine different players came away with a kill to set a new season-high.
Ripon jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening set before expanding it to a massive 11-2 edge later in the set. Lawrence only scored consecutive points on two occasions in the first set, and the Red Hawks stormed to a convincing 25-12 victory to take an easy 1-0 lead.
The Vikings fared only slightly better in the second set, but only after Ripon rattled off the first seven points to stay in their rhythm. A service error gave the Red Hawks the final point, and as the teams swapped sides for the final time, Ripon's 25-14 set win led to a 2-0 advantage.
The third set was the closest of the night, but the home team pulled away late to finish it off with a 25-18 win.
Lydia Ellis recorded the kill that put Ripon up 23-12, a service ace from
Inesha Wiseman followed, and the match ended with an attack error from Lawrence.
Wiseman turned in an even dozen kills to record a game-high, while setter
Riley Nielsen racked up 17 assists in the win. Defensively, the Red Hawks saw 13 different players record a dig, with
Arynn Mathieu and
Sam Thrasher tying one another with a team-high eight apiece.
The win snaps a five-game skid for the Red Hawks, whose last win was also a sweep when they took down Finlandia back on Sept. 24. Ripon is back in action on Friday, when they head to Lake Forest, Ill. for another conference showdown.
